The Help - Katherine Stockett
If you missed this when it came out you are in for a treat!
The novel is set in Jackson Mississippi in 1962 in a world where black maids bring up white children and do the  housework and cooking for bored white women but are not trusted or allowed to use the inside toilet. Skeeter Abilene and Minny become friends despite the rules of prejudice and snobbery in this rigid world and embark upon an adventure that will change them forever.

Compelling, funny and sometimes emotional this entertaining read has had thousands of positive reviews and was turned into a successful movie. Once you try it, you will probably see why!

The Minotaur - Barbara Vine
Barbara Vine – (better known to many as Ruth Rendell) writes under her own name for this novel and it is very different from her better-known work. Set in the 1960s, Kerstin Kvist goes to live in a crumbling mansion in Essex to act as a nurse for John Cosway who lives with his eccentric four sisters and mother. The arrival of a charming artist in the village, sets the sisters in competition and Kirsten starts to wonder about the medication being enforced on john to contain his lunatic episodes.

The book draws the reader into a world with strong characters and a haunting landscape that would not be out of place in a Victorian novel. A creepy library, secrets and characters that live with you, this book is unexpected and supremely entertaining.
