Description:

When Laura Fletcher approaches her home in Oxfordshire to find hordes of photographers crowding the gates, she knows there is something terribly wrong. She is faced with the shocking news that her husband is dead - brutally murdered - and according to Chief Inspector Tom Douglas, there is little doubt that the murderer is a woman.

In a marriage that has taken her from the glamorous five star luxury of London, Venice and Positano to a bleak and draughty manor house in rural Oxfordshire, Laura has learned to guard her secrets well. She is not alone. It would appear that all the women in her husband's life have something to hide.

But there is one secret that she has never shared, and when the investigation reaches its dramatic and horrific climax, she realises that she has no choice. She has to give Tom Douglas the final piece of the puzzle. And this changes everything, leaving Douglas with a terrible dilemma: whether to punish the guilty, or protect the innocent.

Reviews from Amazon:

It's a murder mystery, police procedural; it's an account of abuse and breakdown. It's a keenly observed insight into the controller, the controlled and the fall out. Ms Abbott has absolutely nailed the scenes where police interview suspects. The dialogue is spot on. The use of letters as a narrative tool is clever and works well to explain events outside the immediate present. We are carefully taken into the mind of the abuser and abused and glimpse the world from their twisted viewpoint.

The main characters are diverse but carefully portrayed and interact naturally. The plot has a number of twists and is a roller coaster of tension. This is an absolutely stunning debut novel from a writer with a gift for telling a tale. I can't wait for more! Absolutely gripping.

Really great read. Characters amazing and great understanding and insight. Couldn't put it down and hadn't guessed the killer until author told it, though I am usually good at this. it was so unexpected. Some of the abuse hard to read but still couldn't put it down, took my Kindle on the bus for the 1st time. Loved the way it was written and looked for more by the same author but couldn't find anything. Well worth it.

Really enjoyed this book, couldn't put it down. Kept you guessing all the way through with the twists and turns. Look forward to the next one from this author.

I couldn't put this book down, what a cracker. The way the book is written and the change in prose keeps the interest and pace going from start to finish whilst the intriguing plot is wonderfully interwoven with discoveries we make along the way about the public and private life of the murdered Sir Hugo. The twists and turns and subtle sideline stories all made for a great thriller and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys winding down at the end of the day with a book that has a great mix of crime, romance and psychological tension.
