On Basilisk Station by David Weber

On Basilisk Station by David Weber
Honor Harrington made him look a fool, she's been exiled to Basilisk Station in disgrace and set up for ruin by a superior who hates her. Her demoralized crew blames her for their ship's humiliating posting to an out-of-the-way picket station. The aborigines of the system's only habitable planet are smoking homicide-inducing hallucinogens. Parliament isn't sure it wants to keep the place; the major local industry is smuggling; the merchant cartels want her head; the star-conquering, so-called "Republic" of Haven is Up To Something; and Honor Harrington has a single, over-age light cruiser with an armament that doesn't work to police the entire star system. But the people out to get her have made one mistake. They've made her mad.

Witch, Warlock, and Magician Historical Sketches of Magic and Witchcraft in England and Scotland by W. H. Davenport (William Henry Davenport) Adams
FREE: Witch, Warlock, and Magician by W. H. Davenport Adams

Witch, Warlock, and Magician Historical Sketches of Magic and Witchcraft in England and Scotland W. H. Davenport (William Henry Davenport) Adams.
In this 1889 work, Adams gives a general introduction to alchemy in Europe and traces the development of magic and alchemy in England from the fourteenth century onwards. Initially the disciplines were persecuted by the Church and met with 'the prejudice of the vulgar', languishing throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In Book 1 Adams portrays the English 'magicians' Roger Bacon, whom he considers to have been ahead of his contemporaries; John Dee and William Lilly, astrologists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, respectively; and the English Rosicrucians. Book 2 is a historical account of witchcraft in England and Scotland, from the middle ages to the witch trials of the seventeenth century, and includes a chapter on witchcraft in literature.

Lady Anna by Anthony Trollope FREE: Lady Anna by Anthony Trollope

Lady Anna (1874) by Anthony Trollope is a British Victorian novel of social mores, courtship, and thwarted relationships, dealing with the impact of an extended legal dispute over the validity of a noble title upon the lives of a countess and her daughter. In this powerful story that the author himself considered one of his most successful, Lady Anna is torn between love and duty, between two suitors and the pressures of conforming to her mother's iron will.

Old Greek Stories by James Baldwin
FREE: Old Greek Stories by James Baldwin

Perhaps no other stories have ever been told so often or listened to with so much pleasure as the classic tales of ancient Greece. For many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would.

Eve's Diary, Complete by Mark Twain
FREE: Eve's Diary, Complete by Mark Twain

Eve's Diary" is one of the most famous and notable entries in Mark Twain's series purporting to be the diaries of Adam and Eve. Like the others, it is a different take on the classic story; both humorous and thought-provoking, it recreates the famous scene with surprising plausibility and is very enjoyable. This begins somewhat more light-heartedly than the related stories, and is indeed quite funny, but ends with one of the most powerfully affecting love meditations ever. It is hard to read without a tear, and anyone who has ever loved will be profoundly touched. Often seen as a tribute to Twain's recently deceased wife, this is a small masterpiece. Anyone interested in Twain should read it, especially those who enjoyed related pieces, and it is highly recommended for anyone interested in Genesis - and indeed for everyone, as its core element is the most universal of human feelings. Though well worth reading in itself, it is available in collections - The Bible According to Mark Twain, etc. - alongside related pieces and many other works, making a standalone hard to justify.
