It is the late nineteenth century, and our hero has just created a propulsion engine using apergy - a mysterious source of energy. Since childhood he has thought of traveling through the vastness of space to visit those faraway planets. What beautiful and wondrous treasures do those lands behold? And will they be like us at all? Our hero decides to create a spacecraft and visit the closest of the planets. When he arrives, he not only discovers that there is life, but life that exists is, well, not unlike our own. In fact, it isn't just not unlike our own life, it's mysteriously and frighteningly familiar.

Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard the Third by Horace Walpole

Richard III of England was a hunch-backed, crippled, nephew-murdering, wife-poisoning (and other bad things) villain. We've read or seen the movie, the one where the king yells, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse." And Shakespeare would never lie, right?
Wrong. Shakespeare was writing for the granddaughter of the man who killed Richard and took the throne away from him. He had no right to the throne and knew it. Therefore, all sorts of propaganda had to be spread to paint Richard as black as possible so that Henry VII (father to the infamous VIII and grandfather to the Famous Elizabeth I) could be seem as a legitimate king and keep his reign from blowing up in civil wars.
There are few to no contemporary writers of Richard's time to tell us what he was really like. A letter here, a diary entry there. So most of the writers fell under the Tudor reign and weren't about to embarrass the boss by saying positive things about his predecessor.
One of the first was Horace Walpole who thought all the literature that had been written up about Richard to that point was simply propaganda that had been repeated from writer to writer. So he set out to create another image of Richard. As Walpole mentions, no man is perfect and rulers are less perfect than most since they are in a critical position concerning their country and their people. So Richard made mistakes, but he wasn't a villain.

Richard Warren, aged ten, is growing up in the North Yorkshire village of Ledder Bridge. Through verdant fields and meandering brooks, life is simple and easy, far from the turmoil of the Cold War world. When an adventure with his older brother Peter Warren goes wrong and Richard finds himself trapped in the dark depths of an abandoned quarry, it kick-starts a chain of events that brings him into contact with work, family conflict, and the dreaded English class system. Will Richard be able to persevere and become wise well beyond his tender years?

How to Camp Out by John Mead Gould

Mr. Gould provides the prospective camper with valuable advice covering the logistical, psychological, and social aspects of camping. One of my favorite pages is a list of necessities (which, the author cautions, "is by no means exhaustive") that includes first-aid supplies, shingles (to be used as plates), beeswax, a bean-pot, and even a Bible! In a reflection of his military experience, he devotes part of the text to the importance of the division of labor in the camping party and the requirements of leadership in the person chosen as group captain.

The plot follows Robin Hood as he becomes an outlaw after a conflict with foresters and through his many adventures and run-ins with the law. Each chapter tells a different tale of Robin as he recruits Merry Men, resists the authorities, and aids his fellow man. The popular stories of Little John defeating Robin in a fight with staffs, of Robin's besting at the hands of Friar Tuck, and of his collusion with Allan-a-Dale all appear. In the end, Robin and his men are pardoned by King Richard the Lionheart and his band are incorporated into the king's retinue, much to the dismay of the Sheriff of Nottingham.
