An American journalist's report on the Battle of Verdun. Frank H. Simond visited the battlefield in April 1916 and reported on what his French General Staff escorts showed and told him. Simonds tries to explain that Verdun was morally important but militarily insignificant.
He also explores  why trench warfare was the order of the day in WW1, and why the front lines were mostly static. The book is in stark contrast to books written by soldiers as they are from an American journalists perspectve and perhaps because of that his perspective is so interesting.
