The FT’s latest ebook is a guide to what would happen if Scotland were to vote for independence in a referendum in September 2014. While the outcome is far from certain, a yes vote would have a profound effect not only on the 5.3m people of Scotland, but also on the economic future and fundamental character of the UK. We introduce Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister and driving force behind the independence campaign. We examine the difficult economic issues, led by an independent Scotland’s choice of currency, and the potential benefits independence would bring for example in a separate immigration policy. We include observations from an expatriate Scot that give a flavour of the personal and social backdrop to the constitutional choice. This collection of articles - a mixture of dispassionate reporting and trenchant comment and analysis - first published by the Financial Times between November 2013 and February 2014 is a must for anybody seeking a quick introduction to one of the biggest political events of the year.

Pepys was a naval administrator and friend and confidant of some of the most famous and powerful people in London . Sex, the plague, music, marital conflict, naval life, public executions and incarcerations in the Tower of London. These are just some of the colourful events in the life of a man famous for his writing of a diary.
"Pepys led a full, varied and voraciously-enjoyed life and clearly took pleasure in setting it all down in plain words. Unlike most frantically busy men, he had remarkable powers of observation."
"Alexander conquered the world; but Pepys, with a keener, more selfish understanding of life, conquered a world for every sense."

“If you don’t pay me £250,000.00 in the next 48 Hours you will die”. The text on Josh Hammond’s BlackBerry was blunt and chilling. Surely it must be a joke, but when Josh is attacked in broad daylight and people around him start to die he knows that his blackmailer is deadly serious. Can Josh raise the money, can his attractive new bodyguard protect him, who is blackmailing him and why? He has 48 hours to find out. The first novel in the acclaimed City of London Thriller series is a hit which will enthral everyone who knows and loves its London settings. Rich in detail and truly evocative it is a real page turner, told in around 100,000 words.

Emmeline Pankhurst (née Goulden; 15 July 1858 – 14 June 1928) was a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement which helped women win the right to vote. In 1999 Time named Pankhurst as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating: "she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back." She was widely criticized for her militant tactics, and historians disagree about their effectiveness, but her work is recognized as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in Britain.

Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry by William Butler Yeats

Yeats was educated in Dublin, but spent his childhood in Sligo. He studied poetry in his youth, and from an early age was fascinated by both Irish legends and the occult. These topics feature in the first phase of his work, which lasted roughly until the turn of the century. His earliest volume of verse was published in 1900, and these slowly paced and lyrical poems display debts to Edmund Spenser and Percy Bysshe Shelley, as well as to the lyricism of the Pre-Raphaelite poets. From 1900, Yeats' poetry grew more physical and realistic renouncing the transcendentalism of his youth, though he remained preoccupied with physical and spiritual masks and cyclical theories of life. Over the years Yeats adopted many different ideological positions, including, in the words of the critic Michael Valdez Moses, "those of radical nationalist, classical liberal, reactionary conservative and Nihilists.
