Description:

Military criminal investigator John Puller is drawn closer to home when his aunt is found dead in her house in Paradise, Florida. The local police have ruled the death as an accident, but Puller finds evidence to suggest that she may well have been murdered. On the surface the town lives up to its name, but as Puller digs deeper he realises that this town and its inhabitants are more akin to Hell than Paradise. His belief is confirmed as evidence of strange and inexplicable events come to light. And when Puller learns the truth about what is happening in this once sleepy town, he knows that his discoveries will impact far wider than Paradise.

"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy." -- 1 Timothy 6:17 (NKJV)

In recent years, I've noticed that more people than ever are writing thrillers ... but also that most of such efforts miss the mark by a wide enough margin to leave me feeling at least somewhat dissatisfied. One book may lack a coherent plot, another may have weak action, still another one may be too slow paced, or yet another one may have errors that spoil the story. I could go on, but I won't.

Then, every once is awhile I have the great pleasure of reading a thriller that gets it right. Even if the book is far from perfect, I feel an enormous joy as I read through the book, savouring the action, speeding my way to the end. For me, The Forgotten was such a book. Could it be improved? Sure. But what couldn't be? But it sure is a rewarding thriller to read. Thank you, Mr. Baldacci!

If you missed the first book in this new series, Zero Day, fear not. You can start right in with this story and be all right. In fact, I liked The Forgotten quite a bit better than Zero Day.

Mr. Baldacci makes especially good use of parallel story lines that only occasionally intersect at first, but eventually combine in ways that make a strong thread of suspense and excitement.

I would especially like to commend Mr. Baldacci for helping increase awareness of the reality of human trafficking within the United States, something that many people don't appreciate is a major and growing problem.

This was a really good read. Plenty of action and thrills. The main character, John Puller is in many ways like Jack Reacher, and Reacher lovers will find this book quite familiar. Puller though is a military criminal investigator so has the advantage of a badge. In some ways Puller isn't as compelling as Reacher but I wouldn't put money on who would win in a fight! The writing and story are very good with a number of twists. The ending is very good and another twist. The Forgotten follows on from Zero Day but they are both stand alone stories

It's impossible to avoid the comparison to Lee Child's books because the lead character and overall formula are so similar. If you enjoy Child's books, you're pretty sure to like this too. It's not as good as Child at his best - it doesn't hold your attention as well and Puller is not as charismatic as Reacher. But it's as good or better than several of the recent Reacher installments. I find Baldacci pretty hit and miss as a writer, but this one works.
