Description:

The chilling account of a pivotal encounter between innocence and ultimate malice, Darkness Under the Sun is the perfect read for Halloween – or for any haunted night – and reveals a secret, fateful turning point in the career of Alton Turner Blackwood, the killer at the dark heart of What the Night Knows, the forthcoming novel by Sunday Times best selling author Dean Koontz.

There once was a killer who knew the night, its secrets and rhythms. How to hide within its shadows. When to hunt.

He roamed from town to town, city to city, choosing his prey for their beauty and innocence. His cruelties were infinite, his humanity long since forfeit. But still…he had not yet discovered how to make his special mark among monsters, how to come fully alive as Death.

This is the story of how he learned those things, and of what we might do to insure that he does not visit us.

Darkness Under the Sun is a brand new novella that is as chilling as it is unforgettable. It is available exclusively for download in electronic book format.

Reviews from Amazon:

As dark as the midnight sky. One of the more sinister and serious of Mr Koontz's stories, reminding me of some of his earlier works, rather than adding a bit of dark humour to his tales. This took me about an hour to read (being just 790 locations) but the book had enough content to satisfy me and made me look forward to reading his next book.

As a Kindle freebie this is definitely worth grabbing (I see it's no longer free and it now seems rather pricey for what is a very short novella).

A very short novella, Darkness Under the Sun is a dark and chilling tale. The main protagonist is a 10 year old boy called Howie Dugly and the book tells the story of Howie's brief but life-changing encounter with drifter Alton Turner Blackwood.

The atmosphere is strong and there is a growing sense of unease as things progress. The main story covers a short period of time and reaches a climax about 3/4 of the way in. The last 1/4 of the book is a fast overview of the ongoing life of Howie and how he copes afterwards.
----------
A remarkable short story from Dean Koontz. This short story is a clever crossover with his new book which is due to be published in the New Year. It's a story of Howie who befriends a drifter on the roof of an abandoned apartment store.

Although this is just a novella, Koontz again works his magic and weaves a wonderful tale. His characters, particularly that of the ten year old Howie are more than just names on paper (or screen!), they breath life through Koontz's words and I really didn't want to reach the end as I wanted all the gaps in Howie's life to be fleshed out.----------
