Description:

War and Peace is a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy, first published in 1869. The work is epic in scale and is regarded as one of the most important works of world literature.

It is regarded as Tolstoy's finest literary achievement, along with his other major prose work Anna Karenina (1873–1877).

War and Peace delineates in graphic detail events leading up to the French invasion of Russia, and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society, as seen through the eyes of five Russian aristocratic families.

Portions of an earlier version of the novel, then known as The Year 1805, were serialized in the magazine The Russian Messenger between 1865 and 1867.

The novel was first published in its entirety in 1869. Newsweek in 2009 ranked it top of its list of Top 100 Books.

Reviews from Amazon:

5 Stars : Steve Lindahl - In War and Peace Tolstoy takes three roles. He is a novelist, an historian, and a philosopher. When the role of philosopher is incorporated into the characters it works wonderfully.

As an example here is something Pierre says toward the end of the book when explaining his need to go to Petersburg. It expresses a thought that could be the motto for the current Occupy movement. The idea is, at its core, profound, but it is expressed in a simple way.

The history contained in the novel was fascinating to me because I knew very little about the Napoleonic wars. While reading the book I often went to the internet to compare Tolstoy's view from some other historians. It was an interesting way to learn about that period of world history.

I'm sure it is no surprise that I've rated War and Peace as a five star book given its place in the history of literature. But it isn't only its reputation that makes it well worth the time it takes to read it.

5 Stars : Dan Cooper - Really rockin' battle scenes after the first 100 pages. It's much lighter reading than I anticipated. I hope our generals and our politicians review Tolstoy's analysis before invading another far away country.

5 Stars : Maria Marinas - This is one reason why classics are unbeatable... The action starts slow but, due to the outstanding and entertaining writing, it is interesting and very enjoyable from the very beginning. The characters are described in depth and are very interesting. The relationships amongst them, superb. In spite of the length of the book (1300 pages in small print), it is very readable and, due to the many surprises in the plot, very gripping.

Tolstoy's in depth knowledge of the Napoleonic wars gives the book the authority it would otherwise lack. Having said that, you can directly skip the epilogue with 40 pages more of what Tolstoy thinks about history.
