Description:

A fight to the death - on live TV. The game show where you kill or die, and where the winner's prize is survival.

When Katniss' 12 year old sister's name is called in the 'reaping', Katniss volunteers in her place and is thrown immediately into the preparations for the Hunger Games, a sadistic game show that simultaneously entertains and acts as a warning to the country that attempts to defeat The Capitol and its rulers are futile. For Katniss, 16 years old and from one of the poorest areas, her chances of survival are slim and she has little hope of seeing her home and family again but Katniss has promised her sister she'd try her best and Katniss is nothing if not a survivor....With strong will, a special skill, survival instinct and... maybe... love, Katniss might just stand a chance after all...

The Hunger Games is expected to be one of the highest-grossing films of the year so far.

Reviews from Amazon:

Imagine a post-apocalyptic America; imagine that world ruled by 'divide and conquer', by fear, starvation and regime; imagine the rulers as the 'chosen ones', the ones who are well-fed, worry-free, ruling by sadism and the knowledge that they can do anything to their 'subjects'; imagine the ultimate reality TV programme; a live raffle or 'reaping' where the ones whose names are drawn get to take part in the greatest show - The Hunger Games; a game where there is only one prize - life; a game where there can be only one winner...

I was a little hesitant to buy this trilogy due to it being marketed as a young adult genre, I am nearing 30 and thought this book was fabulously written, very engaging and yes easy to read. No other books have got me so engaged since the Harry Potter books, and not that it is about vampires but if you liked twilight (which I didn't) then you will like this. You get a feel for all the characters, some you will love some you will hate. It is quite a dramatic storyline and I am interested how they portray the action in the film.
