Description:

The lives loves and deaths of splendidly unreasonable inventors is a brilliant analysis of 30 inventors who changed the world. Coller observes that personality type dictates the potential for success in bringing inventions to fruition.

Few people have the full package of skills required to make a success of their idea and failure results when an individual who excels in one area of competence attempts to become all things.

Coller focuses on the people rather the inventions and the way in which they did or did not succeed in bringing their visions to fruition. On one level The lives loves and deaths of splendidly unreasonable inventors is a collection of fascinating stories; on another level these stories are an unconventional look at the inventive process that created such life-changing products as the telephone, the sewing machine, dynamite, the cinema, the safety razor and vulcanized rubber for tyres.

Only historical figures are included, allowing Coller to examine the complete arc of their lives, from early ideas and experiments to success, and often eventual failure.

Each of the stories, all of which are personal, colourful and packed with quirky nuggets of information, illustrates a particular aspect of the inventive personality.

Reviews from Amazon:

This book was recently given to me as a present, and I have found myself fascinated by it ever since. "The Lives, Loves and Deaths of Splendidly Unreasonable Inventors" is a somewhat lengthy and - dare I say - turgid title for what is otherwise a cleverly collected series of short and concise biographies of 20 people whose inventions have helped make our world what it is today. From individuals as diverse as Samuel Morse to King Camp Gillette and Charles Goodyear, Jeremy Coller brings to life the personalities of those who not only have an idea, but also have the vision, commitment and downright stubbornness to develop and exploit it. Each chapter is an easily digestible and self-contained read, and this is a great book for those who like to have something accessible yet informative and stimulating to dip into: possibly whilst grappling with a more weighty tomb by their bedside. For anyone interested in history, innovation, psychology, biography or simply an informative read, written with a delightfully light touch, this is highly recommended.
----------
A well written concise synopsis of some of the world's greatest innovators. Fascinating read.
----------
This book is not only a fascinating insight into what makes inventors tick - and those who partner with them in business - it is also a great read. Each story is unique and opens your eyes to the hard world of innovation and the tough end-point for some of the people associated with houshold items, e.g. Gillette. Few inventors make good businessmen! This book is a must for the budding innovator and anyone with interests in technology.
