Description:

Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell, demoted and reassigned to the remote bush town of Newenham, literally steps off the plane into a murder scene. Dealing with death is never simple, but when the woman leaning over the body proves to be Liam's old flame, it’s evident that his new job is about to become much more complicated.

From Newenham’s cast of eccentric—and sometimes hair-trigger—residents, to the intricate ballet of fishing boats rushing against time to catch their limit, Stabenow captures the contagious spirit of melancholy madness that pervades America’s last frontier. Of course, small town tensions tend to simmer just beneath the surface, and murder, once done, has a tendency to happen again...

New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner Dana Stabenow, a life-long Alaskan, is best known for her Kate Shugak series of mysteries. She has created a compelling new protagonist in State Trooper Liam Campbell.

Reviews from Amazon:

The story slowly develops with clues to follow throughout the story and a number of intertwining threads which all come together at the end. If it was not for about 3 pages which graphically deal with adult themes and seem almost to have been added as an afterthought this novel would be suitable for all ages.

I like the way the characters are developed and from the text I can visualise the characters some of them Moses, the shaman, stand out as exceptional. The Alaskan herring fishing industry with its spotter planes and rivalry between crews is brought to life.

In an area where everyone who knows everyone else is thrown state trooper Liam who does not want the posting but has little choice as he has taken responsibility for a tragedy at his previous posting where he was a sergeant. He arrives at his new post and even before he can change into his uniform he is confronted with a murder to solve, although fast paced in terms of plot time the story is not rushed.
This is the first of the Liam Campbell series and there is an extract from the next of the series "So Sure of Death" I will certainly put this on my reading list.
